When to Trim & Prune
One question we are asked a lot here at Wellington Mowers & Chainsaws is "How often should I trim my bushes?" When it comes to trimming, there’s no right or wrong, but we’d recommend pruning when your hedge is dormant. For most, this will mean deep into the winter months; however, every species is unique! Just remember, the more you trim and prune, the thicker your hedge will become. To keep them looking less dense, ease off on the overall pruning and focus on trimming tall shoots as they arise. FAQ
What’s the difference between single-sided and double-sided hedge trimmers?
Single-sided trimmers are great for long, straight hedges — they’re usually lighter and safer for beginners. Double-sided trimmers cut in both directions, making them faster and better for shaping or working in tighter spots. Your choice depends on the size and layout of your hedges and how much control you want during trimming.
How do I choose between petrol and electric hedge trimmers?
Petrol hedge trimmers are powerful and ideal for larger or tougher hedges, especially on rural properties. They offer longer run time but are heavier and noisier. Electric and battery-powered models are quieter, lighter, and easier to start — perfect for smaller yards and regular upkeep. Battery options also offer cordless convenience with no fuel or cords to manage.
How often should I trim my hedges?
Most hedges benefit from a trim every 6 to 8 weeks during the growing season. Fast-growing species may need more frequent attention, while slow growers can be shaped less often. Regular trimming keeps your hedges healthy, encourages dense growth, and helps prevent them from becoming overgrown or woody at the base.
